Eleven of Landon Donovan’s last 13 goals have come from dead ball situations (nine penalties and two scores on free kicks). As he matures as a player, he’s turned into a distributor.
I’d say my iTunes Genius really ran out of ideas there at the end.
DRAFTMag.com (read: I) needs an intern →
As Internet culture has grown, we’ve come to romanticize certain kinds of unmediated, old-fashioned “human” interactions. But this fantasy ignores how much of normal social interaction is fleeting, bite-size, instant, tweetlike. Humans have always talked to each other via a kind of analog Twitter. These new technologies just get us there with maximum efficiency. Meeting a new person is thrilling, in a primal way — your attention focuses completely, if only for a nanosecond, to see if the creature in front of you has the power to change your life for better or worse. ChatRoulette creates this moment over and over again; it privileges it over actual conversation. Eventually, I realized that clicking “next” was not so much a rejection as it was pure curiosity, like riding a train past an apartment building at night, looking briefly into as many lit windows as possible.
Well said, Sam Anderson.

Final SI.com soccer podcast. All good things must end, especially when one of the co-hosts gets a new job.
My First Earthquake @ Du Nord Cafe →
The lead singer of My First Earthquake dominates the stage at Café Du Nord. The type of girl who’s ballsy enough to “join a band on a dare,” she bounds around while screamsinging the lyrics to “Outta the Band” despite fighting off a weeklong cold. The 100 second-long ode to being ditched highlights the last set of the venue’s pre-Noise Pop show.
“What I’m most pleased about (regarding Marbury) is, of all the foreign players I’ve coached and all that I’ve seen, I think he is one of the best team players. From the very beginning, he’s attended all the team activities. You’ve seen it. He’s not like former foreign players who care only about themselves. In everything, from warm-ups to post-game, he’s always with us. I think that helps team chemistry.”

Just legalize dope →
A proposal to greatly expand San Francisco’s smoking ban won high praise Monday from health professionals concerned about the dangers of secondhand smoke, but got a cool response from local bar and nightclub owners who fear the restrictions would drive away customers.
The legislation would prohibit people from lighting up in front of shops, restaurants and office buildings or puffing away at a sidewalk cafe or in designated smoking patios. Movie theater lines, sporting events, farmers’ markets and common areas of apartment complexes would be off limits, too.
Dear ESPN.com,
That caption makes no sense at all.

Groundhog Day
In San Francisco, it doesn’t matter if P. Phil sees his shadow. It’s never winter here. Suck it, New York.
Promotion!
Despite falling in the first round of the playoffs, the Tater Tots have been promoted to the Premier division of NorCal Athletics San Francisco league. This is more exciting than it should be. All American sports should adopt the promotion/relegation format.
Grant Wahl talks about soccer and Jonah talks about my soccer skills. Awkwardness=high.
This video shows how Sports Illustrated might appear on the Apple Tablet. Pretty cool. But doesn’t this give ESPN the Magazine — which is backed by TV channel that is constantly producing content and could thus be watched on the player — a huge advantage? There’s only so much SI can do in terms of the highlights they show and the footage they can embed into their magazine.
obviously.
Hopefully this won’t happen to the car in South Africa.
Luge and the Sun →
Hamlin, Grimmette and the other athletes will hope for a cool, cloudy day to reduce melting and glare. Of course, no one will complain if the sun shines during the medal ceremony. Nothing highlights a gold quite like that yellow fireball in the sky.
