Leno as Hitler seems a bit dramatic →

Today, NBC — much like Chamberlain — is daft enough to believe that Mr. Leno’s demands will now cease. If history is any guide, this is unlikely. After pocketing Czechoslovakia, Hitler immediately took dead aim at Poland. Using the same game plan, Mr. Leno will soon go after Jimmy Fallon, who follows “The Tonight Show,” quite possibly demanding that NBC expand “Tonight” to its original 90-minute length.

Davis' Discussions: Sacha Kljestan Looks Ahead →

Kljestan offers an honest assessment of his disappointing 2009 campaign.

"I think maybe I took a few breaks during the season and that wasn’t good," he told Goal.com over the phone on Thursday afternoon while taking a break during U.S.’s January training camp. "I think as a whole there were times when I wasn’t as determined as before and I wasn’t putting everything into it. I was trying to rely too much on soccer and not enough on effort."

What he’ll really need in order to win the gold, however, is a windbreaker.

“My Cabindan fixer, Cristóvão Luemba, a correspondent for the Angolan Catholic Church’s Radio Ecclésia, waited two days to mention that he had actually been on the scene during the attack. To listen to Cristóvão’s recording of the shots is chilling (see below), not least because you can imagine the chaos of the situation. “I was on the floor of the car,” he says. Shots hit the auto he was sharing with three other journalists. “My wife was very worried later,” recalls Cristóvão, who was shaken but unharmed. “She said, ‘You have life, you have kids, this isn’t good.’ But I told her this is my profession. I have to do my job.””

Hypothetically

Let’s say Charlie Davies and Clint Dempsey recover in time to take the field against England on July 12. How huge a lift would that be for the American team? Massive, right? If nothing else, the members of the squad genuinely like each other and root for one another. Getting two of their fallen soliders back would put the U.S. into the stratosphere. I’m talking flying around the pitch.

Watch your six, England.

It's important to make snap judgements about bands you've never heard of →

It’s clear from the line wrapped around not one, not two, but three sides of the block demarcated by 3rd, Minna, Montgomery and Howard Streets that 1,000 of our closest friends will be joining us on the list tonight. More accurately, a great many of SF MOMA’s good acquaintances also received an invitation (+1!) to opening night of the 75th anniversary show with special guests including Jackson Pollock (deceased), Dorothea Lange (deceased), and The Dodos (alive; on stage).

Long live Bistro Ball

To whom it may concern,

I write to express my extreme disappointment that WebMediaBrands has decided not to support the 2010 mediabistro.com basketball league.

Two years ago, Amy Hauck and I resurrected the grand tradition started by Dave Gould. The league included a combination of mb staffers, instructors, and members of the wider community. It was a stirring success, both recreationally and financially. Last year, the MBBL returned and ran smoothly, turning a profit with little effort from WEBM staffers.

I have since moved to California, but I asked Shane Ryan (a team captain last season) if he would be willing to run it this year. He agreed and, with assistance from Carmen Scheidel and Hussain Rahim, set about getting the documents in order and signing up players. Last week, however, he was told — and subsequently informed me — that WEBM would not support the league.

While I do not know the full extent of what prompted this decision — Shane was never given a concrete explanation beyond the one faulty line of reasoning I detail below — the choice concerns me on a number of levels. First, it came out of the blue, merely two weeks before the start of play. If nothing else, the timing of the choice is extremely inconsiderate to Shane, who has been working hard to make this happen (and previously had been given approval). Second, Shane was told that there wasn’t enough of a WEBM/mb presence since only four staffers signed up to play. At the end of last season, the same number of employees were participating, rendering this explanation invalid. (Additionally, as you’ll see below, the MBBL isn’t about staff.)

These two issues are rather minor. My final concern is not: The decision to not support the league runs counter to mediabistro.com’s core philosophy. mb is an organization that was founded on — and has made millions off of — the concept of community. The basketball league was a part of this greater community. A small section, for sure, but an important one nonetheless. While staffers were of course invited to play, the more important function of the league was to serve as one of the many ways that mb brings people together. WEBM’s decision to turn its back on this segment of the community, especially considering the MBBL turns a profit and requires little work on the part of company staffers, is hugely disappointing and speaks volumes about the direction of the organization.
